And probably have the same problems.
its like your arguing for separation of powers within an organization lol
No, I'd argue separation of powers in society.
oh
Social media is too powerful, IMO.
oh definitly
tbh trust busting is a route
I'm not so sure.
Silicon Valley can be extremely insular.
And it has a certain collective consciousness.
Thats their problem
they have no rivals
Simply calling Google, Google A, Google B, Google C isn't that effective if they're all essentially the same.
they are all located in the place even
You need actual alternatives.
yea
It's like ABC/CBS/NBC. Is there really a difference?
not much
content varies i guess lol
If I thought trust busting would actually lead to viable alternatives, I'd support it.
Not much.
It's not like Fox versus CNN.
oh yea agreed there
In the case of SV in particular. I think if you trust-busted, European regulations would squash any large alternatives anyway.
They'd all be subject to the same regulations and turn out the same under those regulations.
And I don't like the regulations Europe seems to want to push.
Plus, network effects are very much a factor in social media.
It's a monopolistic industry by nature.
EU fucks things up yea
I don't think people realize how important the EU is in this whole mess.
nope
Since most places are not going to make two separate English services.
remember "we have changed our terms and conditions" emails
that i believe was because of EU regulations
The Culture war isn't actually the American Culture war anymore. It's a anglophone culture war.
And I don't think people realize this.
yea
some do
But you can see it on this server.
but they focus on their particular part of it
All the Canadians, all the Brits, all playing US politics.
yea
kinda
Yeah, this is actually why I think the nationalism thing will eventually die.
The only way to fight effectively is in a group.
And if you are just dividing yourself and not supporting other national groups, you'll eventually lose.
the problem is with what kind of nationalism
i support civic
Everyone fusses so much over definitions I'm not going to attempt to label too much.
But I would say that there's a broader war here that alot of people are missing.
Nationalism is harmless on it's own.
No worse than cheering for a sports team.
I'd actually say that for the immediate future, nationalism is a good thing.
Except you're a part of that team.
extreme nationalism comes and goes based on the state of the world imo
when things are going well it is less prevalent
Telling people to put their god damned 'abolish borders, abolish ice, abolish profit' signs and come be a fucking American with me is harmless.
Telling people to do that, or else consequences
THAT'S where the problems start
(Freudian slip...?)
yea
I think the bigger thing is that people are looking for communities right now.
Nationalism is a relatively safe community to build IMO
It's not necessarily based on skin color.
they just go to some of the shitty communities sometimes
And it has shared interests and characteristics.
unless its ethnic based
I don't want everyone to be an American.
Yeah, that's the culture war.
I don't want to eliminate everyone who's NOT American.
I just want America to be America.
I want Texas to keep being Texas, specifically.
There's people who don't like America as it is. And they see everything as something bigger.
To bad they cant be independent kek
If everyone was America
America wouldn't be superior anymore.
:/
If Everyone was Texas, Texas wouldn't be superior anymore. :\
^ True Texan here.
Tim = BluePilled |---------------------------------------<here>--| RedPilled
If everyone is America then nobody is America
For me, I think there's a far bigger issue at play and that's local control.
As the state gets bigger, it gets more distant
You can have the best State in the Union but I get the best Commonwealth
And can tend to greater corruption.
small scale government has lacked attention imo
It really has.
it goes unnoticed
The other thing is that it has been largely crushed.
people just vote for whoever they vaguely know
And is being threatened by the internet
Abso-fucking-lutely.
Local Control
the more local the better.
The Nation can't dictate your home's rules effectively.
The state can't dictate your city's rules effectively.
It's not just that the internet is bringing together larger groups. It's bringing people who are geographically disparate into the same echo chambers.
Some People lives in a shit hole, even though their's in an awesome State, keep it local
The United Nations can't dictate my life effectively.
the Federal System is supposed to allow for bottom up to some degree
