The 2003 AMA Supermoto Championship had a very special format in that it wasn't a real championship. All year long, the "rounds" didn't add real points, they were qualifier events. The top5 finishers in each qualifier plus a bunch of other contenders qualified for the final event.
Supermoto was invented in the mid-late 1970s in the USA by a British journalist that was told by ABC that he had to create some sort of "all-star of motorcycling". He ended up creating an all-around event that would later evolve into what we now know as "supermoto". It's quite weird how the first pro supermoto championships didn't happen in the USA but in the 90s in Europe.
